Ex-Liverpool Star Tips Arsenal To Remain Title Favourites Despite Villa Setback
Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James believes Arsenal are still favourites to win the Premier League title — even after their 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.
The Gunners saw Leandro Trossard level Matty Cash’s early strike, only for Emi Buendia to snatch a late winner for Unai Emery’s side at Villa Park.
Hours later, Manchester City tightened the title race by beating Sunderland 3–0, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top to just two points.
Speaking to Stadium Astro, James acknowledged Arsenal’s vulnerability when they concede but insists they remain the strongest contender in the race.
“What’s encouraging for the other clubs is when Arsenal do concede, they do look a little bit vulnerable,” James said.
“Villa showed strength, ability and determination and if the other teams can do that they could reduce the gap on Arsenal.
But that’s not to say Arsenal aren’t still the favourites.”
Opinion: Favourites? Maybe. Comfortable? Not Anymore.
David James may be right — Arsenal have looked like a team built to go all the way this season. They’ve shown character, they’ve shown maturity. But their loss to Villa is a sharp reminder:
🔸 Being favourites means nothing if consistency slips.
🔸 Every dropped point will be punished — especially by Manchester City.
It’s December… that time of year when the title race truly begins to take shape. Arsenal have the quality, the belief, and the momentum — most of the time. But City’s shadow is long, and their experience is chilling.
The Gunners might still be on top, but they are being hunted — and hunted by the best team in world football.
If Arsenal want to remain favourites beyond Christmas, they must do more than lead the table…
They must show they can handle the pressure every single week.
The race is on — and the drama is just getting started.
