Alan Shearer Doubts Aston Villa’s Staying Power in Premier League Title Race
Premier League legend Alan Shearer has cast doubt on Aston Villa’s chances of maintaining their title push this season, despite their impressive form under manager Unai Emery.
Villa have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround—climbing from 18th place earlier in the campaign to a strong third-place position. Their latest statement victory came in a thrilling 2-1 win over league leaders Arsenal at Villa Park, narrowing the gap at the top and sending a clear message to their rivals.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer acknowledged Villa’s consistency but still believes the title may be a step too far.
“I don’t think they will win it but they have to have put themselves into the conversation,” Shearer said.
“I don’t expect their brilliant run to continue… but you have to talk about them because of the way they’re playing, the results they’re getting and how consistent they’ve been.”
Opinion: Should Aston Villa Be Taken More Seriously?
It’s easy to understand Shearer’s hesitation. Villa don’t have the deep squad or long-standing experience of title-chasing giants like Manchester City or Arsenal. But football isn’t only about history—it’s about the present.
Right now, Villa look fearless.
They look hungry.
And most importantly, they look like a team that believes they belong at the top.
Unai Emery has transformed Villa Park into a fortress, and players like Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz, and Leon Bailey are playing the best football of their careers. If momentum and mentality count for anything, then Aston Villa deserve much more than just a mention in the title conversation—they deserve respect.
Whether they eventually fade or not, one thing is certain: Villa are making this season more thrilling than anyone expected.
