Spotify Reports 626% Surge in Heartbreak Song Streams in Nigeria

Spotify has revealed a massive rise in heartbreak song streams in Nigeria during the Valentine’s Day season, with a 626% increase recorded between 2022 and 2024.

The data, shared by Phiona Okumu, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, highlights an unexpected trend—more Nigerians are turning to heartbreak playlists during the season of love.

“This Valentine, the sound of love is accompanied by the sound of heartbreak, and the data shows it’s louder than ever before,” Okumu stated.

Men Streaming More Heartbreak Songs

Interestingly, Nigerian men streamed heartbreak songs at a much higher rate than women. The numbers show a 362% increase in male streams compared to 169% among women, suggesting that men turn to music as an emotional outlet more than expected.

“While Valentine’s Day is often celebrated with grand gestures, heartbreak is a common theme on Valentine’s Day—more than what’s publicly shown,” she added.

As Nigerians prepare to mark Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14, 2025, it seems that love and heartbreak go hand in hand—with heartbreak streams at an all-time high. 💔🎶

What are your thoughts on this trend? Do men really feel heartbreak more deeply? 💭👇
