Zimbabwe Unveils 23-Man Squad Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifiers Against Benin Republic and Nigeria
Zimbabwe’s head coach, Michael Nees, has announced a 23-man squad ahead of the nation’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin Republic and Nigeria. The Warriors, who are currently languishing at the bottom of Group C with two points from four games, face an uphill task if they are to revive their qualifying campaign.
Despite their poor run of form, Nees has named a strong squad featuring Udinese defender Jordan Zemura and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ versatile midfielder Marshall Munetsi. In a surprise but welcome twist, veteran forward Walter Musona has also made a return to the squad, reversing his earlier decision to retire in 2022. His experience and leadership could prove invaluable as Zimbabwe faces its toughest test yet.
However, the Warriors will be without their captain Marvelous Nakamba, who misses out due to injury. His absence leaves a significant void in midfield, which Nees will need to address to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Match Schedule
Zimbabwe vs. Benin Republic: Thursday, 20th March at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban.
Zimbabwe vs. Nigeria: Tuesday, 25th March at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The Warriors need nothing less than victories in these upcoming fixtures to revive their dwindling World Cup dreams.
Opinion: Can the Warriors Roar Back to Life?
Michael Nees faces an enormous challenge as Zimbabwe’s hopes of making it to the 2026 World Cup hang by a thread. His decision to recall Walter Musona shows he’s willing to bet on experience to pull the team through this difficult phase. But is it enough?
Playing against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic and the mighty Super Eagles of Nigeria on their home turf is a daunting task. However, there’s a sense of renewed optimism among fans with the return of key players like Musona.
The fact remains that Zimbabwe’s previous performances have been disappointing. But football is unpredictable, and all it takes is one inspired performance to change the narrative.
Can the Warriors silence their critics and prove they belong on the biggest stage of world football? Only time will tell.
What do you think? Will Zimbabwe rise to the challenge or crumble under pressure? Let’s discuss!
