Mason Greenwood Applies for International Switch to Jamaica
Former Manchester United striker, Mason Greenwood, has officially applied to switch international allegiances from England to Jamaica, signaling a new chapter in his career.
The 23-year-old, who currently plays for Marseille, has only made one senior appearance for the Three Lions. However, his international future took a different turn after being sidelined following his 2022 arrest and the subsequent dropping of all charges in 2023.
Now, Greenwood has informed FIFA and the Football Association (FA) of his intention to represent Jamaica—a move that, once approved, will be irreversible.
FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham confirmed the switch:
“My understanding is that he’s asked to switch. That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to switch again because you can only change allegiance once.”
England’s Stance on Greenwood
Despite his immense talent, England manager Gareth Southgate never seemed keen on recalling Greenwood. The FA clarified that there was no formal approach to bring him back into the Three Lions setup.
“Gareth was upfront in saying that Greenwood hadn’t been in his thinking because he hadn’t been performing at that level,” Bullingham added.
Opinion: A New Beginning for Greenwood?
Greenwood’s move to Jamaica is not just about international football; it’s a statement about his rebirth in the sport. With his controversial past still casting a shadow over his career in England, playing for Jamaica could offer a fresh start and allow him to express himself without the same scrutiny.
For Jamaica, acquiring a player of Greenwood’s caliber and experience would be a massive boost as they aim to become more competitive on the international stage.
Do you think Greenwood will thrive with Jamaica, or did England miss out on a top talent?
