Flamingos Edge Closer to World Cup with Commanding Win Over South Africa
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, took a significant step towards securing a spot at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after an impressive 3-1 victory over South Africa at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, Pretoria, on Saturday.
A dominant first-half display saw Nigeria take control of the game early on. Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring in the 20th minute, setting the tone for a confident performance from the young Nigerian side. Forward Harmony Chidi doubled the Flamingos’ lead from the penalty spot just before halftime, giving them a comfortable cushion going into the break.
However, South Africa came out fighting in the second half, earning a penalty just two minutes after the restart. Skipper Katleho Malebana stepped up and converted from the spot, reigniting hopes for the home side. But Nigeria was not to be denied, as Chidi bagged her second goal of the match in the 68th minute, restoring the two-goal advantage and sealing a well-deserved victory.
One Foot in the Next Round, But Not Over Yet
With this result, Nigeria heads into the second leg at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, next Saturday in a strong position. The Flamingos will need to maintain their focus and avoid complacency, as South Africa will be eager to stage a comeback.
One thing is clear: this Flamingos squad has shown immense promise. Their attacking prowess, combined with their ability to control the midfield, makes them a strong contender for a World Cup spot. However, football is unpredictable, and the job is far from done.
With the final qualifying round just one step away, can the Flamingos finish the job at home and secure their ticket? Nigerian fans will be eagerly awaiting the second leg, hoping to see their young stars shine once again.
