“Na Dada Be the Problem?” — Daddy Showkey Slams Niger Governor Over Dreadlock Arrest Order

“Na Dada Be the Problem?” — Daddy Showkey Slams Niger Governor Over Dreadlock Arrest Order

Veteran Nigerian musician and cultural icon Daddy Showkey has voiced strong disapproval over the recent directive by Governor Umar Bago of Niger State, ordering the arrest of individuals with dreadlocks in the state capital, Minna.

The governor, during a security meeting on Tuesday, claimed that this move is part of efforts to tackle the rising wave of insecurity in the region.

But the directive has triggered a social storm, especially after Daddy Showkey—famous for his iconic dreadlocks and Afrocentric style—responded publicly via Instagram on Thursday.

Mohammed Umar, na Dada be your problem? I dey come to Minna but now that you asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, so hold your state. But make you cut your beer beer (beard) first,” he fired, calling out what many see as misplaced priorities.

💬 Opinion: Policing Hair Won’t Fix Insecurity — It's Time for Sensible Solutions

Let’s be real: blaming hairstyles for insecurity is not just lazy, it’s harmful. Targeting dreadlocks—a hairstyle deeply rooted in African culture and identity—could be seen as profiling and stereotyping youth, especially at a time when Nigeria is crying out for unity, inclusion, and forward-thinking leadership.

The real question should be: Is insecurity about appearance or about the failure of intelligence, strategy, and socio-economic reforms?

Rather than cutting locks, perhaps leaders should be unlocking opportunities.

🔥 What's Next?

The backlash is growing, and voices like Daddy Showkey’s amplify a wider sentiment: that cultural identity should not be criminalized in the name of fighting crime.

Will Governor Bago reconsider this controversial move? Or will other public figures join the resistance?

Only time will tell.

🗣️ What’s your take? Should we still be judging people by their hairstyle in 2025? Let’s hear from you.
