“I Regret the Trauma”: Kim Kardashian’s 2016 Robbery Suspect Yunice Abbas Expresses Remorse at Paris Trial

“I Regret the Trauma”: Kim Kardashian’s 2016 Robbery Suspect Yunice Abbas Expresses Remorse at Paris Trial

Yunice Abbas, one of the ten men on trial for the shocking 2016 robbery of reality TV star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian in Paris, has expressed remorse for the psychological toll the ordeal had on the celebrity.

The now 72-year-old Abbas, who previously detailed his role in the crime in a controversial book titled “I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian,” told the court on Tuesday that while he had spent years engaging in criminal activities, this was the first time he truly realized the emotional harm his actions caused.

“I regret it, not because I got caught, but because there was a trauma,” Abbas told the jury during his testimony.

The robbery, which occurred during Paris Fashion Week in 2016, made global headlines. Kardashian was held at gunpoint, tied up, and locked in a bathroom while over $9 million worth of jewellery, including her famous engagement ring, was stolen. The crime stunned both fans and security experts due to its boldness and high-profile victim.

Trial of the “Grandpa Robbers”

The group, dubbed the “grandpa robbers” by French media due to the advanced ages of several suspects, includes men in their 70s and 80s. Abbas is the first defendant to testify in the proceedings, which resumed this week.

While Abbas had previously confessed to his involvement, he told the court he did not personally tie up Kardashian, instead remaining downstairs to act as lookout. He also distanced himself from the sensationalism of his book, claiming he did not choose the title and feels it misrepresents his role.

Opinion: Remorse or Reputation?

While Abbas’ expression of regret may be seen as a human moment in a courtroom drama, it’s hard to ignore the timing and context. After writing a book, cashing in on the crime’s notoriety, and then denying aspects of his involvement — one wonders: is this true remorse or a calculated play for leniency?

Regardless, Kim Kardashian's traumatic experience, which she has spoken about publicly and which deeply affected her personal and public life, remains a reminder of the price of celebrity and the vulnerabilities that come with fame.

Her ability to move forward, expand her empire, and speak openly about trauma has become a symbol of resilience for many. But the legal process now seeks justice — not just for stolen diamonds, but for the fear, helplessness, and emotional scars left behind.
