“Nigeria Has Less Crime Than UK Because of Jungle Justice” – Skales Sparks Debate in Viral Interview

“Nigeria Has Less Crime Than UK Because of Jungle Justice” – Skales Sparks Debate in Viral Interview

Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Skales, has made a bold and controversial claim about crime rates in Nigeria versus the United Kingdom, citing extrajudicial punishment—particularly jungle justice—as the key reason criminals in Nigeria act with more caution.

Speaking during an interview on the Just Vibes podcast, Skales said:

“There is lesser crime in Nigeria compared to UK because they know if they [criminals] get caught, there is jungle justice. They burn you alive.”

While the singer admitted that he does not support jungle justice, he emphasized its deterrent effect on crime, arguing that fear of immediate, often brutal punishment keeps some would-be criminals in check in Nigeria.

Skales also used the platform to discuss the Afrobeats movement, noting that the genre is more of a musical umbrella than a strict sound category. According to him, Afrobeats is a flexible style influenced by many rhythms and vibes, making it hard to define.

💭 Opinion: A Risky Truth or a Dangerous Narrative?

Skales’ remarks are bound to stir conversation—and rightly so. While his observation about fear-based deterrence may reflect certain street-level realities, endorsing or even referencing jungle justice as a crime-fighting strategy is a double-edged sword.

Yes, in some communities, fear of mob action may discourage petty crimes. But mob justice is lawless, often misdirected, and in many tragic cases, innocent lives are lost. The moment we start seeing jungle justice as a viable alternative to a just and structured legal system, we normalize chaos over reform.

Rather than relying on fear and violence, the focus should be on strengthening Nigeria’s judicial and law enforcement institutions. Citizens deserve to feel protected by the law, not terrorized by it.

🎶 On a lighter note, Skales’ insight on Afrobeats is spot on. The genre’s fluidity is exactly what makes it so powerful and internationally adored. From street-hop to amapiano fusion, Afrobeats is a sound without borders—and just like the music, the discussions it inspires can be just as layered and complex.

🗣️ What do you think—was Skales being realistic, or did he cross the line?
