“I Want to Win It for My People” — Salah Opens Up on Ballon d’Or Dreams and Egyptian Pride
Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah is not just chasing individual glory — he’s chasing it with millions behind him. In a recent interview with France Football, the Egyptian forward opened up about his deep desire to one day lift the Ballon d’Or — not just for himself, but for his people.
“It’s not in my hands but obviously, one day I would like to win the Ballon d’Or for my people,” Salah said.
“When you come from a village in Egypt, as a child, it is difficult to dream of the Ballon d’Or.”
At 32, Salah has had yet another outstanding season, scoring 33 goals and delivering 23 assists in 49 games for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, helping the Reds to clinch their record-equalling 20th league title. But their early exits in the Champions League and Carabao Cup may dent his Ballon d’Or hopes this year.
Still, Salah remains hopeful — and grounded.
“If I don’t win it, my career will still be successful. I’m only 32, several winners in recent years have been in their thirties,” he added. “Next season promises to be exciting — defending our title, the Champions League, the AFCON, and the World Cup.”
💭 Opinion: Salah’s Ballon d’Or Dream Isn’t Just Personal — It’s Cultural
What sets Salah apart isn’t just his numbers — it’s the narrative. From the dusty streets of Nagrig to the bright lights of Anfield, Salah’s story is one of inspiration, especially for African and Arab youth who see themselves in his journey.
His humility, work ethic, and consistent excellence have made him more than a footballer — he’s a national hero and a global role model. And while the Ballon d’Or has long favored flashier names and leagues, there’s a compelling argument that Salah has done more than enough — for his club, for his people, and for the beautiful game.
⚽ Do you think Salah deserves the Ballon d'Or this year? Or is next season his best shot?
