Nollywood Mourns: Body Positivity Advocate Monalisa Stephen Passes On at 32

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actress and body positivity advocate, Monalisa Stephen.

Monalisa passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in Lagos, after reportedly battling complications from low blood sugar and internal bleeding. Her death was confirmed by her immediate younger sister and made public by Seun Oloketuyi, CEO of Best of Nollywood Awards.

“Brand influencer Monalisa Ayobami Stephen is dead,” Oloketuyi wrote in an emotional tribute. “She died yesterday in Lagos after losing the fight against low sugar and internal bleeding. Her immediate younger sister confirmed the death of this hardworking and beautiful soul.”

A Voice of Strength in a Harsh World

Beyond her film career, Monalisa became a beacon of courage, self-love, and authenticity. She rose to prominence not just on-screen but as a fearless body positivity champion — boldly challenging societal standards, online bullying, and mental health stigma.

She was admired for her unapologetic confidence, and her fierce advocacy for plus-size women in an industry that often imposes narrow definitions of beauty. In countless interviews and viral social media posts, she encouraged people to embrace their bodies, speak out on mental health, and reject online hate.

Opinion: A Light That Dared to Shine Differently

Monalisa Stephen wasn’t just an actress — she was a movement, a living challenge to the norms that made many women feel invisible. Her death is a painful reminder of how fragile life is, and how society must do more to support people — not just with words, but with empathy and proper care.

She battled online trolling, health issues, and societal pressure, yet continued to rise with grace and strength. Her passing leaves a void in Nollywood and in the hearts of many who saw her as a symbol of hope and resilience.

Let her life remind us to be kinder, more supportive, and to redefine beauty on our own terms.

Rest in Peace, Monalisa Stephen

Your voice, your light, your legacy — will never be forgotten.
