Tems on Confidence, Curves, and Culture: “I Love That I’m Curvy”
Grammy-winning Nigerian R&B sensation Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, is not just serving vocals — she’s serving confidence, culture, and charisma.
In a recent sit-down with Cocoa Butter in Atlanta, Georgia, the “Love Me Jeje” crooner shared what she treasures most about being a Black woman — and her answer was unapologetically authentic.
“My favourite thing about being a Black woman? I love being curvy. I love that I have a little booty, you know what I’m saying?” Tems said with a smile.
She didn’t stop there. Tems went on to talk about how her Nigerian heritage influences her fashion, describing her style as detailed, blingy, and unafraid.
“I’m definitely into details. I’m definitely into the bling. I think Nigerians are very extravagant in everything, and I’m very into that. But I always put my own spin and I’m not afraid to be who I am,” she added.
Opinion: Tems Is More Than a Voice — She’s a Cultural Mirror for a Generation
Tems’ comment about loving her curves may sound light-hearted, but in a world where Black women are often policed for their bodies or expected to fit into rigid beauty standards, this is revolutionary in its simplicity.
Her self-love isn’t just personal — it’s political. It’s a celebration of African beauty, of unfiltered femininity, and of self-worth beyond the spotlight.
In a time when many celebrities conform to global beauty ideals, Tems is boldly saying: I love who I am — naturally, culturally, completely. And that’s exactly what makes her not just a star, but a symbol.

Should more African stars speak openly about body image and self-love?
Tems continues to redefine beauty and power — one song, one quote, one moment at a time.
