NNL Cracks Down on Fan Violence: Godswill Akpabio FC, Barau FC Slapped with Heavy Fines

NNL Cracks Down on Fan Violence: Godswill Akpabio FC, Barau FC Slapped with Heavy Fines

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has taken a strong disciplinary stance, handing out hefty fines and stadium bans to Godswill Akpabio FC and Barau FC for acts of violence and misconduct during recent league games.

🔴 Godswill Akpabio FC Hit with ₦3 Million Fine

The Uyo-based club was slammed with a ₦3 million fine following disturbing scenes of assault and intimidation towards match officials during their 2-2 draw against Rovers FC on matchday 15. The league’s ruling body also closed the Uyo Township Stadium to fans for the rest of the season—a sharp response meant to curb unruly behavior.

🔴 Barau FC Also Penalized

In a separate ruling, Barau FC was fined ₦2 million after their fans threw objects at Gombe United’s technical area, injuring staff and disrupting the match for over 15 minutes. The club has also been ordered to pay ₦150,000 for medical expenses and will play all remaining home matches behind closed doors.

🗣 Opinion: Time for a Cultural Reset in Nigerian Football?

These sanctions send a loud and clear message: violence has no place in football. But beyond the fines and bans, this moment should spark reflection across all levels of Nigerian football—from fans to club owners.

Football is passion, yes—but it must never turn toxic.
Our stadiums should be spaces of joy, unity, and safe competition, not battlegrounds for frustration and lawlessness.

If we want the NNL and NPFL to grow, we must demand more respect for referees, opponents, and the spirit of the game.

👁️ The Bigger Picture:

While the NNL’s sanctions are commendable, long-term solutions must follow—including fan education, tighter stadium security, and stricter club accountability.

For now, these fines serve as both a warning and a wake-up call.
