"Pack It In, Maresca": Simon Jordan Slams Chelsea Boss Over Conference League Complaint
Former Crystal Palace chairman turned fiery pundit, Simon Jordan, has taken a swipe at Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, calling his complaints about the UEFA Europa Conference League scheduling “unnecessary whining.”
As the Blues prepare to face Real Betis in the final next Wednesday, Maresca raised concerns over the perceived unfair advantage for Betis — whose La Liga season ends earlier, giving them more time to prepare.
But Jordan wasn’t having any of it.
“Maybe if you got the job done, you could’ve put the reserves out this weekend. So pack it in,” Jordan said on talkSPORT, with his trademark bluntness.
“You’re playing in the pub Conference League. You should be able to win it anyway.”
🗣️ Opinion: Disrespect or Fair Frustration?
Jordan’s comments may be scathing — but not without a pinch of truth. The Conference League is undoubtedly third-tier European football, and Chelsea — with their squad depth and budget — should be front-runners regardless of a few extra rest days for Betis.
Still, Maresca’s frustration isn’t entirely baseless. Elite managers obsess over fine margins, and in modern football, 72 hours more rest could be the difference between a trophy and disappointment — especially in a final.
Rather than brushing it off, UEFA could consider standardized scheduling fairness across leagues for future European finals. After all, what’s the point of a level playing field if the grass is greener on one side?
