#JusticeForVDM: Kokopee Raises Alarm Over Alleged EFCC Targeting, Nigerians React

In a twist to the ongoing detention of social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), his associate and vocal supporter, Kokopee, has alleged that officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are now going after him for demanding the release of his friend.

Taking to his social media, Kokopee expressed fear and confusion, claiming he’s being targeted simply because he’s been outspoken about the perceived injustice surrounding VDM’s continued detention without charge.

“Instead of EFCC to release statement, time don pass 10 o’clock, release statement, you no release statement, release VDM you no gree. Instead una release people make them look for me… What did I do to EFCC?”

His emotional outcry has sparked a wave of reactions online:

  • @SegXmeta: “Nothing can stop this move. VDM must be freed.”

  • @timi_fred: “You no dey fear arrest, but you dey run make them no arrest you. Double standard.”

  • @naijamplifaya: “But what did he do? Why are they holding him without charges? Nawa o.”

  • @Tioluwalope0: “This Kokopee is a clout chaser walai. No logic in his statements.”

💭 Opinion: Is Criticism Now a Crime in Nigeria?

If Kokopee's claim is true, it reflects a disturbing pattern — where calling for accountability is met with intimidation. Whether or not one agrees with VDM’s methods, it’s undeniable that freedom of speech and lawful dissent must not be criminalized.

Targeting vocal friends and supporters is not just petty — it’s dangerously authoritarian. The EFCC, by detaining VDM without formal charges and now allegedly harassing his associates, risks eroding public trust in institutions meant to uphold justice.

Let’s be clear: Asking questions is not a crime. Defending a friend is not an offense. And a democracy without room for dissent is not a democracy at all.

🔍 What do you think: Should activists and supporters be silenced for demanding transparency, or is the state overreaching?
