Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç Claims Victor Osimhen is “Too Big” for Turkish Football
Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç has caused a stir in Turkish football after claiming that Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, is "too big" to play in the Turkish Süper Lig. In a recent interview with TRT Spor, Koç suggested that the Nigerian striker’s talents are destined for a bigger stage than what Turkish football can offer.
Osimhen, who moved to Galatasaray from Napoli on loan last September, has been in sensational form, scoring 33 goals across all competitions. His stunning performances have sparked interest from the Yellow and Reds, who are eager to make the move permanent come the end of the season.
However, Koç's comments have raised eyebrows. “Osimhen is a special player and a player above Turkey,” Koç said, implying that the forward's skills surpass the level of the Turkish league. He further added, “That player (Osimhen) is in a different category. He also comes once in 40 years.”
The remarks seem to suggest that the Nigerian striker’s star power might be too great for a league like the Süper Lig, which is often overshadowed by top-tier European competitions. Koç also touched on the financial complexities of securing Osimhen’s permanent transfer, citing concerns over spending limits and tax regulations.
✍🏽 Opinion Corner: Is Osimhen Too Big for Turkey?
Ali Koç’s words, though controversial, highlight the undeniable talent of Victor Osimhen. The striker has been a revelation in Serie A, and his performances for Galatasaray suggest he’s more than capable of playing at the highest level. His ability to score goals, hold up play, and cause problems for defenses is something that many top clubs across Europe will be monitoring.
While the Turkish Süper Lig has a rich footballing history, it is often seen as a stepping stone for players aiming for more lucrative challenges in the top five European leagues. Osimhen is certainly one of those players who could find success at a higher level—whether that’s in the Premier League, La Liga, or even in Serie A once again.
The debate over Osimhen’s future in Turkey is far from over. Galatasaray may be eager to keep him, but his ambition and potential could very well take him to clubs with more prestigious footballing histories.
