Gideon Okeke Questions Double Standards in Weapon-Carrying Laws
Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke has stirred public discourse with a bold question on social media, highlighting what he perceives as double standards in Nigeria’s enforcement of weapon laws.
In an Instagram post, Gideon questioned why cattle herders are allowed to openly carry weapons such as machetes and cutlasses, while pastors or other Nigerians face scrutiny or legal threats for doing the same.
"Are pastors and cattle rearers not equal citizens?" he asked pointedly.
His comments come in response to a viral incident involving Lagos-based pastor Paul Adefarasin, who was accused of brandishing a weapon during an altercation with a content creator filming his convoy.
🔥 Public Reactions Pour In
The post has since sparked debate online, with many Nigerians resonating with the actor's frustration. Critics argue that security policies appear selective and that certain groups enjoy unspoken immunity when it comes to bearing arms.
Others, however, caution that context matters—pointing out that while herders may carry tools as part of their trade, there’s a difference when it comes to public figures allegedly threatening civilians.
💬 Opinion: A Call for Clarity and Equality
Gideon’s question taps into a deeper issue in Nigeria—the perception of unequal treatment before the law. Whether it’s herders, clerics, or civilians, Nigerians deserve clarity, consistency, and fairness in how laws are applied.
At a time when national unity and trust in the system are fragile, moments like these should spark institutional introspection rather than defensiveness.
