Piers Morgan Hits Out at Ten Hag After Admitting Ronaldo Was “Never the Problem” at Man United

Piers Morgan Hits Out at Ten Hag After Admitting Ronaldo Was “Never the Problem” at Man United

English broadcaster Piers Morgan has taken a swipe at former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo was “never the problem” during his time at Old Trafford.

Speaking after Bayer Leverkusen’s 2–0 pre-season defeat to Chelsea on August 8, Ten Hag was asked by reporters if Ronaldo had been an issue at United. “For me, he’s no problem. He was never the problem and I think that’s the past,” the former Ajax boss told ESPN.

Morgan, who famously interviewed Ronaldo in 2022 before the Portuguese star’s controversial Old Trafford exit, wasted no time in responding. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

“We know. YOU were the problem.”

Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United in 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjær was met with excitement, and his debut season saw him deliver standout performances. But following Solskjær’s exit, Ten Hag took over in 2022 and soon made it clear that Ronaldo wasn’t central to his plans. The Portuguese forward eventually had his contract mutually terminated before heading to Saudi Arabia.

Ten Hag did secure the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in subsequent seasons, but his tenure ended in October 2024 after a rocky relationship with players, inconsistent results, and mounting criticism.

Opinion:
Ten Hag’s recent admission feels like the football equivalent of an awkward “maybe you were right” years after a messy breakup. For Ronaldo’s fans — and especially for Piers Morgan — it’s vindication.

But this moment also reflects a broader truth in football: big personalities and elite managers often clash, and the fallout can overshadow both the player’s and the club’s progress. Whether or not Ten Hag was the problem, his belated acknowledgment is bound to reopen old debates among United fans.

In the end, the story isn’t just about Ronaldo or Ten Hag — it’s about how pride, egos, and timing shape football legacies. And as Morgan’s cheeky jab proves, some wounds in the sport never truly heal… they just wait for the perfect quote to sting again.
