Ian Wright Urges Arteta to Turn to Madueke After Saka Injury Blow
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has advised manager Mikel Arteta to hand new signing Noni Madueke the chance to step up in place of Bukayo Saka, who suffered a hamstring injury during the Gunners’ emphatic 5-0 win over Liverpool at the Emirates.
The Gunners maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season, with goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Jurrien Timber, who both scored twice, before Saka sealed the rout with a fifth.
However, the win came at a cost. Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard was withdrawn with a shoulder knock, and minutes later, Saka went down clutching his hamstring. Arteta admitted post-match that the winger’s injury looked “significant,” sparking concerns he could be sidelined for four to six weeks.
On Premier League Productions, Wright highlighted the importance of squad depth:
“But hamstring, we’re talking four or maybe six weeks. This is why the signings [are important]. Madueke can play this side and this is why you bring in a Madueke. I’m not saying he’s going to play like Saka, but fill that gap… he’s got a chance now.”
Opinion: Madueke’s Moment to Shine?
Saka’s absence is undoubtedly a massive blow—he’s not just Arsenal’s poster boy, he’s their heartbeat on the right wing. But football, especially at the highest level, is about opportunities born from setbacks.
Madueke didn’t come to Arsenal to warm the bench. This could be his chance to show why the club invested in him, to add his own flair while carrying the weight of expectation. Of course, nobody expects him to replicate Saka’s brilliance overnight, but stepping into that role—even temporarily—could be the defining moment of his Arsenal career.
For Arteta, the situation is bittersweet: losing a star while testing the depth he fought hard to build this summer. For Arsenal fans, it’s a reminder that their title charge depends not only on the first XI but also on the hunger and resilience of those waiting in the wings.
If Madueke delivers, this could be the start of Arsenal’s next big attacking story.
