Daniel Regha Slams Pastor Adeboye Over Sermon on Wealth and Spirituality

Daniel Regha Slams Pastor Adeboye Over Sermon on Wealth and Spirituality

Popular social media critic Daniel Regha has called out Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), over comments the clergyman made during the church’s 73rd Annual Convention.

Pastor Adeboye had, in his sermon, warned Christians against the obsession with material wealth, describing such pursuit at the expense of spiritual growth as “an act of stupidity.”

“God does not hate enjoyment,” the revered pastor said.
“But the body you pamper, shine, and make up will perish one day. Take care of the spirit, for that is what will go to heaven. If you are pursuing wealth at the expense of your soul, that would be stupidity.”

While many worshippers and followers received the message as a call to deeper spiritual reflection, not everyone was impressed—especially Daniel Regha, who took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his criticism.

Regha wrote:

“Pastor Adeboye reportedly owns a private jet, a mansion, has access to luxury vehicles, but he’s preaching against prioritizing material wealth over spiritual well-being.
Many top Nigerian Men of God are known to live a lavish lifestyle, almost never practising what they preach.”

Regha’s statement has since sparked a debate online, with users divided. While some agree with his point about perceived hypocrisy among wealthy pastors, others argue that owning wealth doesn't necessarily contradict spiritual teachings—as long as wealth isn't idolized.

Context & Background

Pastor Adeboye, one of Nigeria’s most influential religious leaders, has often emphasized the importance of righteous living over riches. However, criticisms regarding the opulent lifestyles of megachurch leaders in Nigeria have become increasingly frequent, especially on social media.

This latest clash between preaching and perceived practice again highlights a growing demand for transparency and accountability among religious leaders in Africa’s most populous nation.
