Lizzy Anjorin Rejoices as Alleged Facebook Defamer is Arraigned in Lagos Court

Lizzy Anjorin Rejoices as Alleged Facebook Defamer is Arraigned in Lagos Court

Nollywood actress and entrepreneur, Lizzy Anjorin, has expressed satisfaction after one of her alleged online defamers was formally arraigned in a Lagos court.

The actress took to her Instagram page on Thursday to comment on the case and caution bloggers against sharing defamatory content. In a celebratory and reflective tone, she wrote:

“Swap and learn from a pathetic blackmailer...
Don’t believe some shit on social media...
Blackmailing job is not profitable... Sope I will never be a failure in my life.”

Anjorin’s comments came following the arraignment of 37-year-old Akanji Kofoworola, accused of defamation and cyberbullying. The defendant was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Wahab Balogun at a Lagos court by the Zone Police Command, Onikan, on charges stemming from allegedly defamatory Facebook posts targeted at Anjorin.

According to the police prosecutor, Haruna Ibrahim, Kofoworola, along with others still at large, had since 2023 shared false and obscene material on social media meant to tarnish the actress’s public image. The prosecution claimed that Kofoworola was fully aware the posts she shared were untrue.

The charges brought against her fall under Sections 39, 57, and 150 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015, which deal with false information, criminal defamation, and cyber offences.

Kofoworola pleaded not guilty. While the police requested her remand, her legal team argued for bail, assuring the court she would not obstruct the investigation.

Magistrate Balogun granted her ₦100,000 bail with two sureties of like sum, who must reside in Lagos and present evidence of tax payments.

Opinion: A Wake-Up Call for Social Media Users?

In an age where the internet gives everyone a microphone, Lizzy Anjorin's case serves as a reminder that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. Online defamation, especially against public figures, is becoming more rampant—and so are legal crackdowns.

This case should serve as a wake-up call to both bloggers and casual social media users: not every trending gist is true, and reposting lies could land you in trouble. In the end, digital responsibility is not just ethical—it’s increasingly becoming legal.
