Pat Nevin Points Fingers at Chelsea Defenders After Bayern Defeat
Former Chelsea star, Pat Nevin, has placed blame on Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah following the Blues’ 3-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
At the Allianz Arena, Chelsea struggled to contain the attacking power of the Bundesliga giants. Two goals from Harry Kane and an unfortunate own-goal from Chalobah secured victory for Vincent Kompany’s side, while Cole Palmer provided Chelsea’s only consolation.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Nevin criticized the lack of defensive sharpness from the Blues’ backline, suggesting Kane was given far too much freedom.
“In the big, big moments today, Kane has stood up,” Nevin said. “He’s cruised away from the likes of Chalobah and Tosin.”
Chelsea will now turn their focus to the Premier League, with a high-stakes clash against Manchester United awaiting them this weekend.
Opinion: Chelsea’s Defence Still a Work in Progress
Chelsea’s defeat to Bayern Munich doesn’t just underline the brilliance of Harry Kane—it also exposes the fragility in Chelsea’s defensive setup. Tosin and Chalobah may have taken the brunt of Nevin’s criticism, but the truth runs deeper. Chelsea’s defence as a unit still lacks cohesion, communication, and the ruthless discipline required at the highest level.
The Blues are in a transitional phase, blending young talents like Palmer with experienced heads. However, against clinical sides like Bayern, defensive lapses will always be punished. Kane’s goals weren’t just about individual brilliance—they highlighted how one moment of ball-watching or hesitation can swing a Champions League tie.
The good news? This Chelsea squad has shown flashes of resilience, and Palmer’s goal is proof of their attacking potential. But if they are to compete with Europe’s elite again, Mauricio Pochettino must instill a defensive steel that matches the creativity going forward.
Because in football, flair wins matches—but solid defences win trophies.
