Carragher Tells Amorim: “Leave Man United Before It Gets Worse”
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has openly advised Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, to walk away from Old Trafford, describing his spell so far as nothing short of “a disaster.”
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher didn’t mince words when assessing the Portuguese coach’s troubled tenure.
United, who finished in 15th place last season, currently sit 14th on the table and remain unable to string back-to-back victories. Their 3-1 defeat to Brentford over the weekend only added to the growing discontent.
Carragher said:
“This has been a disaster for Man United and Ruben Amorim. What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic and he looked like the next big thing as a manager.
But bringing a manager with a system like his never suited the traditions of Man United. The quicker the club make a decision on the manager, I think it’s better for everybody. We’re only waiting for the inevitable.”
Opinion: A Case of Wrong Fit, Not Wrong Coach
Carragher’s blunt verdict will sting for Amorim, but it reflects a truth many United fans are beginning to accept: this appointment has not worked. The Portuguese tactician may have shone at Sporting Lisbon, but Old Trafford has proven a different beast.
The issue isn’t Amorim’s talent, but his fit. Manchester United, steeped in attacking traditions and a demand for flair, have struggled to adapt to his rigid tactical systems. The result? Drab football, poor results, and a fan base losing patience.
Yet, it’s also fair to say that Amorim inherited a fractured club, one plagued by poor decisions long before his arrival. The temptation is to pin all failures on him, but United’s deeper problems — ownership confusion, flawed recruitment, and lack of identity — run much deeper.
Still, football is a results business. For Amorim, every week at United risks tarnishing the glowing reputation he built in Portugal. Sometimes, leaving early is not failure — it’s damage control. And as Carragher suggests, perhaps both Amorim and United need a clean break before the relationship becomes irreparable.
