Aboutrika Hails Super Eagles as AFCON 2025’s Strongest Side After Algeria Win

Aboutrika Hails Super Eagles as AFCON 2025’s Strongest Side After Algeria Win

Former Egypt star and two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mohamed Aboutrika, has tipped Nigeria’s Super Eagles as the strongest team at the ongoing 2025 AFCON, following their convincing quarter-final victory over Algeria.

The Super Eagles booked their semi-final place with a 2–0 win on Saturday, as Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams found the net to end Algeria’s campaign. Beyond the scoreline, Nigeria’s authority throughout the game caught the attention of Aboutrika, who was full of praise for their all-round display.

Speaking on Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports, Aboutrika described Nigeria as a complete team with no obvious flaws.
“The strongest team is the one that won, and Nigeria doesn’t have any clear weaknesses,” he said.
“They were very present physically and also skilled in their work. They have players who can create chances and forwards who are good at scoring, and they are very strong in physical and air battles.”

Aboutrika went on to single out four Super Eagles players for their standout performances. Victor Osimhen led the line with authority, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi controlled the midfield. Akor Adams impressed on the right wing, and Nigeria’s defence remained solid and disciplined throughout the contest.
“They played almost perfectly. It’s a well-earned win because Nigeria played better and were stronger during the game,” he added.

From an observer’s point of view, Aboutrika’s assessment feels difficult to argue against. Nigeria have combined power, pace and discipline in a way that few teams at this tournament can match. More importantly, they are no longer relying on individual brilliance alone; they are playing as a unit, with clear balance between attack, midfield and defence.

As Nigeria prepare to face host nation Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday, January 14, confidence within the Super Eagles camp will be high. However, the real test lies ahead. Morocco’s organisation and home support will pose a serious challenge, but if Nigeria maintain the same intensity and focus that dismantled Algeria, they will rightly believe they are on course for another AFCON final.

For fans, this is the kind of moment that fuels belief — that the Super Eagles are not just winning, but doing so with authority, identity and purpose.
