AFCON 2025: Calvin Bassey to Miss Super Eagles’ Next Match After Suspension
Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, has been ruled out of Nigeria’s next fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a one-match suspension.
Bassey picked up a yellow card during Nigeria’s tense semi-final encounter against Morocco on Wednesday night, a booking that proved costly as he was already on the disciplinary watchlist going into the game. The caution, received in the first half, automatically triggered a one-match ban.
As a result, the Fulham centre-back will miss Nigeria’s next outing at the tournament, whether it turns out to be the AFCON final or the third-place playoff. It has also been confirmed that the suspension is final and cannot be appealed.
The development comes as a significant blow to Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, with Bassey having been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers at the competition. His composure, physical presence and defensive awareness have played a major role in Nigeria’s solid backline throughout the tournament.
However, Nigeria will receive a timely boost with the return of captain Wilfred Ndidi, who is expected to be available again after serving his own suspension.
Opinion: A Big Loss, But Not the End
There is no doubt that Calvin Bassey’s absence will be felt deeply. He has been a rock at the heart of Nigeria’s defence, bringing calm, aggression and leadership in crucial moments. Losing such a key figure at this stage of the tournament is never ideal.
Still, this situation also tests the depth and resilience of the Super Eagles. Championship-winning teams are often defined not just by their stars, but by how well they adapt to setbacks. With Ndidi returning and other defenders ready to step up, Nigeria still has the tools to remain strong at the back.
If anything, Bassey’s suspension may serve as extra motivation for the rest of the squad to fight harder, stay compact, and push for a historic finish at AFCON 2025.
