Bassey Vows Super Eagles Will Finish Strong After Morocco Heartbreak

Bassey Vows Super Eagles Will Finish Strong After Morocco Heartbreak

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has reflected on Nigeria’s painful semi-final exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the team remains determined to end the tournament on a positive note by securing third place.

Nigeria were knocked out by hosts Morocco on Wednesday night in Rabat after a goalless draw ended in a penalty shootout defeat. Despite the disappointment, Bassey emerged as one of Nigeria’s standout performers, putting in a commanding defensive display that neutralised Morocco’s key attacking threat, Ayoub El Kaabi.

Reacting to the loss, the Fulham defender admitted it was a difficult way to miss out on the final but expressed pride in the team’s effort and unity throughout the competition. He also made it clear that the Super Eagles are not done yet and will approach the third-place playoff with full commitment.

“We thank God in all situations. A gutting way to end the tournament. The support and togetherness we’ve felt has been special. Sorry we couldn’t take it all the way, we fought and gave it our all. We’ll build on this. Not finished yet though, we still have something to push for,” Bassey wrote on X.

Nigeria will face Egypt in the third-place match on Saturday at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca. However, Bassey will miss the encounter due to suspension, a blow to Eric Chelle’s side given his consistency and leadership at the back.

Opinion: A Leader’s Mentality Despite the Setback

Bassey’s reaction perfectly captures the spirit of this Super Eagles squad. While the pain of falling short against Morocco still lingers, his message shows maturity, accountability and a winning mentality that goes beyond one result.

Even in defeat, Nigeria’s defensive resilience—led by players like Bassey—proved they can compete with the very best on the continent. His absence against Egypt will be felt, but his words underline a squad that is focused on growth, pride and finishing strong.

Securing third place may not erase the heartbreak of missing the final, but it would send a clear message: this Super Eagles team is building something solid. And with leaders like Bassey setting the tone, the future remains bright for Nigerian football.
