AFCON 2025: Rio Ferdinand Tips Osimhen, Lookman, Iwobi as Key to Super Eagles’ Success

AFCON 2025: Rio Ferdinand Tips Osimhen, Lookman, Iwobi as Key to Super Eagles’ Success

Manchester United legend and former England defender, Rio Ferdinand, has singled out three Super Eagles stars he believes can drive Nigeria to Africa Cup of Nations glory.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final clash with hosts Morocco on Wednesday night, Ferdinand named Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi as the players capable of making the difference for the Super Eagles.

The ex-United captain made the remarks on his popular podcast, Rio Presents, where he openly expressed his admiration for Nigeria’s squad and attacking quality.

“All of my African friends – most of them are probably 75 per cent Nigerian,” Ferdinand said.
“And if I say anyone else, they are gonna kill me. I know it’s not secure yet, but nah, they’ve got Osimhen though.
Osimhen’s looking to go past [Rashidi] Yekini. You’ve got [Ademola] Lookman, the [2024] African Player of the Year. And then you’ve got [Alex] Iwobi playing. I would like to see Nigeria, man.”

Nigeria head into the semi-final with confidence after an impressive run at the tournament, with Osimhen, Lookman and Iwobi all playing central roles in the Super Eagles’ attacking threat.

Opinion: Star Power Meets Belief

Ferdinand’s comments underline what many football fans across the continent already feel—this Nigerian side has the blend of talent, hunger and balance needed to go all the way. Osimhen’s relentless drive and goalscoring instinct, Lookman’s creativity and big-game presence, and Iwobi’s intelligence and control in midfield give Nigeria an edge few teams can match.

Beyond the individual brilliance, the Super Eagles have shown unity and belief throughout the tournament. When respected voices like Rio Ferdinand openly back Nigeria, it reflects the growing fear and respect this team commands.

If these three stars rise to the occasion once again, Nigeria’s AFCON dream may not just be alive—it could be destined for history.
