NPFL Condemns Crowd Violence After Remo Stars vs Ikorodu City Clash, Summons Clubs

NPFL Condemns Crowd Violence After Remo Stars vs Ikorodu City Clash, Summons Clubs

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has expressed strong displeasure over reports of crowd violence that marred the Matchday 20 encounter between Remo Stars and Ikorodu City in Ikenne.

Remo Stars edged the fixture 1–0, but the game was overshadowed by disturbing scenes after the final whistle, as reports emerged of physical attacks on fans within and around the stadium.

Reacting to the incident, NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, made it clear that the league body is unhappy with the development, stressing that such acts go against the values and vision of the domestic league.

TalkTalk Nigeria recalls that the NPFL had earlier intervened before the fixture, holding a meeting with both clubs in a bid to resolve existing tensions and prevent any breakdown of order.

Despite those efforts, the post-match violence has now prompted decisive action. The NPFL has summoned Remo Stars and Ikorodu City to an investigative hearing scheduled for Monday, January 19, at the league’s headquarters in Abuja.

“In light of the reports and video evidence that are in our possession, the NPFL is inviting the two clubs to an investigative hearing on Monday, January 19 at our office in Abuja,” the league stated.

According to the NPFL, the purpose of the hearing is to establish the immediate and remote causes of the incident and apply the relevant rules, with appropriate sanctions to be handed down to any individual or club found culpable.

Opinion: A Test of the NPFL’s Zero-Tolerance Promise

While the NPFL deserves credit for acting swiftly, this incident once again raises serious concerns about crowd control and fan culture in Nigerian football. Matches should be decided by goals and tactics, not fists and chaos after the final whistle.

The league has made visible strides in recent seasons — better pitches, improved officiating, and increased media coverage — but incidents like this threaten to undo that progress. Fans must feel safe attending matches, regardless of rivalry or result.

This investigative hearing is more than a formality; it is a test of the NPFL’s commitment to discipline and professionalism. Firm, transparent sanctions will send a clear message that violence has no place in the league. If handled decisively, this moment could become a turning point — one where Nigerian football chooses growth over disorder and passion over aggression.
