Eucharia Anunobi Threatens Legal Action Over Alleged Past Affair With Pastor
Veteran Nollywood actress and evangelist Eucharia Anunobi has vowed to take legal action against Psalm Okpe, founder of Fresh Oil Ministry International Church, following the circulation of a controversial audio recording.
The leaked audio allegedly featured Okpe and another pastor, Martins, making explicit claims about romantic involvement with Anunobi and church leader Chikere Nwafor. The conversation also included unverified allegations of homosexuality against another male pastor, adding to the public uproar.
Okpe, who once ordained Anunobi into ministry, issued a public apology, calling the recording “disturbing” and expressing embarrassment over his remarks.
Reacting, Anunobi condemned the cleric, describing him as a “monumental global shame.” In a detailed Instagram post, the 60-year-old actress rejected the claims, insisting that the allegations are false and have caused her “emotional trauma.”
She emphasized that she has lived a celibate life since her ordination nearly 14 years ago, despite being engaged or in courtship during that period.
“I want to state here categorically that in almost 14 years since I have been midwifed into ministry, I have been celibate and have been keeping myself for the man that will be deserving of my new virginity… None of these men can say they have had sex with me. That is why I boldly preach righteousness,” Anunobi wrote.
The actress further revealed that she has initiated legal proceedings against Okpe, submitting petitions to Nigerian and U.S. authorities for defamation and threats to her ministry.
“I am not going to allow that to be swept under the carpet because that malicious, vile statement has left me in emotional trauma. My lawyers have been instructed to start the process of writing a petition to the Nigerian Police Force and the U.S. Security and Immigration Department,” she added.
Opinion: Protecting Reputation in the Age of Viral Audio
This incident underscores the profound impact of unverified claims in the digital age. While public figures are often under intense scrutiny, false allegations—especially those with intimate or personal implications—can cause long-lasting emotional and reputational damage.
Anunobi’s decision to pursue legal action is a strong reminder that freedom of speech does not extend to spreading defamatory content. Her stance highlights the importance of accountability, especially when allegations could tarnish someone’s personal and professional integrity.
In a society where social media amplifies rumors at lightning speed, it is crucial for both content creators and listeners to exercise caution before sharing unverified information. Legal recourse, as Anunobi is pursuing, remains a critical tool for protecting one’s name and maintaining the credibility of ministries and careers that are built on public trust.
The case will likely draw significant attention, but it also serves as a cautionary tale about the responsibility that comes with public influence—both for those speaking and those listening.
