Kunle Remi Criticizes Lagos’ Portrayal During IShowSpeed’s African Tour
Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has shared his disappointment over how Lagos was depicted during American streamer IShowSpeed’s ongoing African tour.
The streamer, who landed in Lagos last Wednesday, is on a 28-day livestream journey titled ‘Speed Does Africa’, which kicked off on December 29, 2025. The tour aims to showcase African culture, people, and landscapes to a global audience, with Nigeria being the 15th stop.
Reacting on his Instagram story, Kunle described Lagos as the “worst” destination on his personal list, expressing concern that the portrayal lacked depth and authenticity. He argued that the city was “stripped naked,” and that what was showcased leaned heavily on nightlife and superficial attractions, failing to capture the true essence of Nigerian culture.
“Seems like we have lost the essence of culture. Our truth! All we have is fake drinks, club and beggy beggy skills,” he wrote, criticizing the shallow focus of the presentation.
Opinion: A Missed Opportunity for Cultural Storytelling
Kunle’s critique highlights a wider issue in how African cities are often represented to global audiences. While showcasing nightlife and popular attractions can be entertaining, it risks reinforcing stereotypes and overshadowing the rich history, traditions, and daily life that give a city its unique identity.
Lagos, with its vibrant markets, art scenes, culinary diversity, and entrepreneurial spirit, offers so much more than clubs and party culture. A more holistic portrayal could have amplified Nigeria’s global image and educated audiences about its depth and heritage.
For influencers and content creators visiting Africa, Kunle’s observations serve as a timely reminder: entertainment is valuable, but authenticity is priceless. Highlighting culture in all its dimensions not only respects the host country but also creates content that truly resonates with global viewers.
