Angela Okorie Remanded Over Defamation Case, Filmmaker Stanley Ontop Calls for Fair Judicial Process

Angela Okorie Remanded Over Defamation Case, Filmmaker Stanley Ontop Calls for Fair Judicial Process

Popular Nigerian actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Facility following allegations of defamation involving fellow actress Mercy Johnson. The Abuja Court handed down the remand order on Wednesday, shortly after Okorie’s arrest.

The development has sparked reactions within the Nollywood community. Filmmaker Stanley Ontop lamented the handling of the case, questioning the speed and approach of the Nigeria judiciary. He also accused Mercy Johnson of intimidation, urging her to pursue the matter through proper legal channels, noting that defamation is typically a civil issue.

In an Instagram post, Ontop wrote:

“Free @realangelaokorie now Irrespective of who is involved. If you feel they defamed your person, kindly approach a competent court and sue the person involved. Omo when Nigeria police will even learn to do their work well?”
“So the judicial can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep this night knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison!!! Angela I will never forsake you,” he added.

Opinion: Justice Must Follow Process, Not Pressure

The case underscores a broader issue in Nigeria’s judicial and law enforcement systems: the blurred lines between civil disputes and criminal action. Defamation, while serious, is generally a civil matter and can often be resolved without incarceration. Okorie’s remand raises questions about proportionality, due process, and the proper use of police and judicial resources.

Stanley Ontop’s comments reflect the frustration felt by many Nigerians when the legal system seems to bypass established procedures, especially in high-profile disputes. At the same time, the case highlights the importance of resolving conflicts through courts rather than public intimidation or social media pressure.

While it is crucial that everyone has access to justice and protection of reputation, this situation also emphasizes that the rule of law must be applied fairly and consistently, regardless of fame or public interest. For Angela Okorie and other parties involved, the hope is that the case proceeds transparently, ensuring that the judicial process respects both rights and procedure.

Ultimately, this case serves as a reminder that even in the glare of public scrutiny, justice must remain measured, fair, and guided by law—not haste or influence.
