Ronaldo Has Left The Portugal Camp After Being Benched
Copenhagen · Thursday 1 October 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal camp in Copenhagen after spending the whole of Tuesday's 2-1 Nations League win over Norway on the bench. He missed Wednesday's final training session, and Portugal face Denmark tonight without him.
What Jorge Jesus said
The Portugal coach insisted there had been "no incident whatsoever" between him and the 41-year-old, and said earlier on Wednesday that Ronaldo had not refused to train. He also made clear who picks the team: if everything goes to plan, "it will be Goncalo who plays", and Ronaldo comes on if he is needed.
| Ronaldo, this week | |
|---|---|
| Tuesday | Warms up, does not come on as Portugal beat Norway 2-1 |
| Wednesday | Misses final training, leaves camp |
| Thursday | Portugal play Denmark without him |
Rafael Leao has been handed the No. 7 shirt in his absence.
"Any player, when you spend 20 or 30 minutes warming up and then don't get on, no-one is happy." Jorge Jesus
The lesson for every veteran
Great players rarely choose the timing of their exit from the national team. It is usually chosen for them by a coach with a younger option. How Ronaldo responds in the next few days will shape how this chapter is remembered far more than any goal he scores between now and the end.
