Edo Queens Won On Penalties, And CAF Says The Referee Skipped Extra Time
Abuja · Thursday 1 October 2026
The Nigeria Football Federation has appealed against CAF's decision to annul Edo Queens' victory in the WAFU-B qualifying final for the CAF Women's Champions League. The appeal was filed on Wednesday 30 September and signed by the NFF deputy general secretary, Emmanuel Edem Ikpeme.
What happened in Ouagadougou
Edo Queens and Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana drew 2-2 in the final on 5 September. The referee went straight to penalties, which Edo Queens won 4-1. CAF's regulations say a final must go to two periods of extra time first. On 26 September CAF annulled the result, ordered the final to resume from extra time at 2-2, and told Edo Queens to return the trophy and medals.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 5 September | 2-2, Edo Queens win 4-1 on penalties |
| 26 September | CAF annuls the result |
| 30 September | NFF lodges its appeal |
At stake is the zone's only place at the CAF Women's Champions League.
If the referee gets the procedure wrong, the fix should land on the officiating, not on the side that won the shootout.
The practical problem
Even if CAF's reading of its rules is correct, restarting a final weeks later from extra time is strange. Squads change, players are injured, and momentum is gone. A replay of extra time is not the match the two teams played. The cleanest outcome is to let the result stand and discipline the officials.
