Nathaniel Bassey Shares Close Encounter With Alleged ‘Juju Man,’ Credits Faith for Protection

Nigerian gospel minister and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has recounted a startling encounter with an alleged traditional spiritualist, whom he described as a “juju man,” claiming the man tried unsuccessfully to cast a spell on him.

Bassey revealed that the incident occurred along an express road and marked the second time the same individual had approached him. Speaking during a worship session, he explained that the man knocked on his car and allegedly attempted to influence him through spiritual means.

“I just stood there and laughed,” Bassey said, adding that he responded by declaring Bible verses, including scriptures affirming divine protection such as “Touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm” and “There is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.”

According to the pastor, the man lingered at the scene, seemingly waiting for the alleged spell to take effect. Bassey eventually stepped out of his car and ordered the individual to leave immediately, expressing later that he regretted not detaining the man until law enforcement could arrive.

The cleric emphasized that his account was not meant to glorify evil but to illustrate the presence of spiritual wickedness and the power of faith.

“One time on the express road, he came and knocked. He was casting an enchantment, hoping that it would influence me… I just came out of my car and ordered him to get out of here, you dirty devil, quick,” Bassey said. “While we do not glorify the devil, there is wickedness in the world.”

Opinion: Faith and the Modern Encounter With Spiritual Challenges

Nathaniel Bassey’s testimony highlights an intersection of faith, personal belief, and societal perceptions of spirituality. In many African contexts, encounters with traditional or spiritual practitioners are not uncommon, and individuals often rely on faith and scripture as a source of protection and reassurance.

Bassey’s reaction — confronting the situation calmly with scripture rather than fear — offers a perspective on spiritual resilience. Whether one interprets the incident literally or metaphorically, it emphasizes the value of maintaining personal conviction in the face of challenges that test one’s beliefs.

For many, the story is a reminder that faith can serve as both comfort and shield in difficult or unsettling circumstances. It also sparks dialogue about the coexistence of traditional practices and modern life, highlighting the need for discernment and the importance of legal recourse when personal safety is threatened.

Ultimately, Bassey’s experience underscores the idea that belief, courage, and composure are as essential as vigilance in navigating a world where unseen challenges are perceived to exist.
