Court Authorises International DNA Tests in Mohbad Paternity Case
The Ikorodu High Court in Lagos State has approved three international laboratories—two in the United Kingdom and one in the United States—to conduct DNA tests to determine the paternity of Liam, the son of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba.
The decision comes amid a prolonged dispute initiated by the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, who has repeatedly questioned the child’s paternity. Mr. Aloba has also maintained that his son’s remains, following his death on September 27, 2023, will not be reburied until clarity is established through a DNA test.
At the resumed hearing of the case between Mr. Aloba and Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, counsel to the singer’s father disclosed that the court adopted a balanced and transparent approach in selecting the laboratories.
“The court has eventually picked three DNA laboratory centers—two in the UK and one in the US. One from us, one from them, and the court picked an independent one,” the lawyer told journalists.
He further explained that the matter has been adjourned to April 7 for an update on the collection of samples. According to him, welfare officers will supervise the process to ensure fairness and credibility, with all parties present during sample collection. Representatives of both sides are also expected to monitor the delivery of samples and the testing procedures at the selected laboratories.
The ruling marks a significant step toward resolving a controversy that has generated widespread public attention and emotional debate since the singer’s passing.
Opinion: A Painful but Necessary Path to Closure
The court’s decision to involve internationally recognized laboratories reflects the sensitivity and public importance of this case. By selecting neutral and independent centers abroad, the judiciary appears committed to ensuring transparency and eliminating doubts about the credibility of the results.
However, beyond the legal and procedural dimensions lies a deeply human story—one involving grief, trust, and family conflict in the aftermath of a tragic loss. Public disputes over paternity, especially involving a deceased figure as beloved as Mohbad, inevitably intensify emotions and media scrutiny.
While legal clarity is essential, it is equally important that all parties approach the outcome—whatever it may be—with dignity and respect, particularly for the child at the center of the matter. Liam’s welfare and emotional well-being should remain paramount.
Ultimately, this development offers hope for resolution. A definitive scientific result could provide closure to a grieving family and allow the late singer’s memory to rest free from lingering controversy.
