Veteran Actor Okunnu Calls Out Film Marketer Olasco Over Alleged Unpaid Movie Deal
Popular Nollywood comic actor Wale Akorede, widely known as Okunnu, has sparked conversations within the Yoruba movie industry after publicly accusing film marketer Olasco Films of failing to pay him for a project he produced years ago.
Speaking during a trending interview with media personality Olugbenga Oropo Valentine on the SAWORO programme, the veteran actor expressed deep disappointment, revealing that he has not forgiven the marketer over what he described as unpaid “sweat.” According to Okunnu, he wrote, directed and played the lead role in the movie Aare, which was released in two parts simultaneously, yet he claims he did not receive any financial compensation from the project.
“I once did a movie for Olasco and he didn’t give me anything… not even N5 for pure water,” the actor said, adding that he still hopes justice will eventually prevail.
The allegation has stirred reactions among fans and industry watchers, many of whom see it as another reminder of the long-standing challenges surrounding contracts, transparency and fair payment in Nollywood’s traditional distribution system.
Opinion: While the truth behind the dispute may require hearing from all parties involved, Okunnu’s revelation shines a light on a broader issue creatives continue to face — the protection of intellectual labour. For an industry that thrives on passion and storytelling, fair compensation remains essential for growth and professionalism. As Nollywood evolves into a global brand, clearer agreements and stronger business ethics may be the key to ensuring that talents are rewarded not only with applause but with the value their work truly deserves.
