Cristiano Ronaldo Linked With MLS Move Amid Growing Tension at Al-Nassr
Cristiano Ronaldo could be heading for a major career shift if his ongoing disagreement with Al-Nassr remains unresolved. According to Portuguese journalist Duarte Monteiro, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is considering a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) should talks with the Saudi club fail to produce a solution.
The 41-year-old forward, who is determined to remain match-fit ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has been notably absent from Al-Nassr’s last two Saudi Pro League fixtures against Al-Riyadh and Al-Ittihad. Reports suggest Ronaldo’s frustration stems from what he perceives as a lack of support from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) during the winter transfer window, especially when rival clubs like Al-Hilal received reinforcements.
Matters reportedly worsened after the PIF blocked Karim Benzema’s proposed move from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal late in the transfer window. Monteiro claims Ronaldo feels the club’s directors lack sufficient authority and backing, a situation that has left the Portuguese star deeply dissatisfied.
“Ronaldo wants to keep playing often before the World Cup, and that’s his main focus. If there is no agreement, he will go to the American league,” Monteiro said.
Despite having a contract with Al-Nassr until the summer of 2027 — including a reported €50 million exit option — Ronaldo’s priority remains staying competitive. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also revealed that the forward has informed top Saudi Pro League officials that he is considering leaving this summer, even though his preference is to continue in Saudi Arabia.
Opinion:
Ronaldo’s situation highlights a familiar theme in his legendary career: ambition over comfort. Even at 41, his hunger to compete at the highest possible level remains undiminished. If MLS becomes his next destination, it would not be a retreat, but a strategic move to ensure regular football while expanding his global influence even further.
For Al-Nassr and the Saudi Pro League, this moment feels pivotal. Keeping a global icon like Ronaldo happy goes beyond contracts — it requires sporting ambition and visible support. Whether this standoff ends in reconciliation or a headline-making MLS switch, one thing is clear: Ronaldo is still chasing history, and he won’t allow uncertainty to slow him down.
