Infantino Reveals Trump’s Position on Iran’s Participation in 2026 FIFA World Cup Amid Political Tensions

Infantino Reveals Trump’s Position on Iran’s Participation in 2026 FIFA World Cup Amid Political Tensions

The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, has disclosed the stance of Donald Trump regarding Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The development comes amid rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, which have sparked concerns about whether the Iranian national team will be able to take part in the global football tournament.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As preparations intensify for the tournament scheduled to begin in June, questions have emerged about how political tensions could affect participating teams.

Iran secured qualification for the tournament through the Asian Football Confederation qualifiers, but uncertainty remains due to the strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Speaking after a meeting with President Trump, Infantino said the American leader made it clear that Iran’s national team would still be welcomed to compete.

“This evening, I met with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, to discuss the preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the increasing anticipation as we are set to commence in just 93 days. We also addressed the current situation in Iran, noting that the Iranian team has qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said in a statement.

“During our discussions, President Trump emphasized that the Iranian team is certainly welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States. We all require an event like this to unite people now more than ever, and I genuinely appreciate the President of the United States for his support, as it once again demonstrates that football brings the world together.”

Despite the assurance, the broader diplomatic relationship between the two nations continues to raise questions about whether political factors could still influence Iran’s final participation.

Opinion: When Football Meets Politics

The situation highlights a recurring challenge in global sports—balancing politics with the unifying spirit of competition. Events like the FIFA World Cup are meant to bring nations together, even when political relations are strained.

Historically, football has often served as a bridge between cultures and countries that otherwise disagree on political matters. Allowing teams to compete regardless of diplomatic tensions reinforces the idea that sport can rise above politics.

However, the reality is that global tournaments rarely exist in a political vacuum. Visa policies, diplomatic relations, and security concerns can all shape participation.

If Iran ultimately competes in the 2026 World Cup, it could serve as a powerful reminder that sport still has the capacity to create moments of unity in a divided world. ⚽🌍
