VAR Controversy: Arsenal Benefitted from Missed Penalty Call Against Brighton

Arsenal F.C. have come under scrutiny after Premier League officials admitted the club benefitted from a major VAR error in their 1–0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. earlier this month.

The match at the Amex Stadium was decided by an early goal from Bukayo Saka, securing all three points for Arsenal in a tightly contested encounter.

However, controversy arose late in the first half when Brighton’s Mats Wieffer was brought down in the box by Gabriel Martinelli. Referee Chris Kavanagh waved play on, and VAR official Michael Salisbury chose not to intervene.

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel has now reviewed the incident and concluded that Brighton should have been awarded a penalty.

According to the panel’s ruling: “Martinelli is not looking at the ball, holds Wieffer into the area and prevents the Brighton player from challenging for the ball.”

The panel voted 4–1 in favour of awarding a penalty on the field and 3–2 that VAR should have intervened to correct the decision.

This marks the second time this season Arsenal have avoided conceding a penalty after a controversial VAR call. In a previous match against Everton F.C., a challenge by William Saliba on Thierno Barry was also not penalised, denying Everton a potential equaliser.

Opinion: VAR Still Struggling to Deliver Consistency

While VAR was introduced to reduce human error in football, incidents like this continue to raise questions about its consistency and reliability. Arsenal may have benefitted on this occasion, but such decisions can easily swing against any team on another day.

The split decision within the KMI Panel itself shows how subjective officiating can still be, even with video technology. For fans and players, the frustration lies not just in mistakes, but in the lack of clear and consistent standards.

If the Premier League hopes to maintain credibility, improving VAR decision-making and transparency must remain a priority. Because in a tightly contested title race, moments like this could ultimately define the outcome of the season. ⚽
