O’Neill Explains Iheanacho’s Struggles at Celtic, Cites Fitness Concerns
Celtic F.C. manager Martin O'Neill has opened up on the challenges facing Kelechi Iheanacho this season, admitting that fitness issues and limited playing time have slowed the Nigerian striker’s progress at the Scottish club.
Iheanacho, who joined Celtic during the summer transfer window after terminating his contract with Sevilla FC, initially showed promise in the early weeks of his arrival. The 29-year-old forward registered three goal contributions in his first four matches, raising hopes that he would become a key figure for the Scottish giants.
However, a hamstring injury soon disrupted his momentum and limited his opportunities to secure a regular place in the team.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Record, O’Neill acknowledged that Iheanacho has not had enough minutes on the pitch to fully demonstrate his ability.
“I don’t think he has played that much during the course of the season, to tell you the truth. But I think he’s got a good ability to hold it up,” O’Neill said.
The Celtic manager also pointed to fitness concerns as a major obstacle for the Nigerian international.
“It is just in terms of full fitness and things, that’s a bit of a concern. I do feel for him a little bit, because my job is not to please everyone here at the football club,” he added.
O’Neill further admitted that competition within the squad has made it difficult for Iheanacho to break into the starting lineup consistently.
“To be perfectly honest, I don’t think he’s had a proper chance, because I thought there were other people who may be better equipped for this league at this minute,” he stated.
Opinion: Iheanacho Still Has a Point to Prove
Iheanacho’s situation at Celtic reflects a common challenge faced by players trying to rebuild their careers after difficult spells elsewhere. While the striker showed flashes of his talent early on, injuries and competition have clearly slowed his progress.
However, it may still be too early to write him off. Iheanacho has previously demonstrated his ability at the highest level, particularly during his time in the English Premier League, where he produced several memorable performances.
For Celtic, patience could be key. A fully fit Iheanacho remains a technically gifted forward capable of linking play and scoring important goals. If he can overcome his fitness setbacks and regain confidence, the Nigerian striker may yet prove to be an important asset for the club before the season ends. ⚽
