Semi Ajayi Returns from Injury as Hull City Fall 3–1 to Millwall in Championship Clash

Semi Ajayi made his long-awaited return from injury, but it was not enough to prevent Hull City A.F.C. from suffering a 3–1 defeat to Millwall F.C. in their EFL Championship encounter at MKM Stadium on Saturday.

The match marked Ajayi’s first appearance of 2026 after spending weeks on the sidelines due to injury.

The Nigerian international had been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury while representing Nigeria national football team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Despite the lengthy absence, the experienced centre-back completed the full 90 minutes against Millwall, showing encouraging signs of fitness as he continues his recovery.

Ajayi has now featured in 13 league matches for Hull City this season.

However, the defeat proved costly for the Tigers, who were unable to capitalize on home advantage against a determined Millwall side.

Even with the loss, Hull City remain fifth on the Championship table with 60 points from 36 matches, keeping them firmly in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

Opinion: Ajayi’s Return Could Still Be a Boost for Hull’s Promotion Push

Although the result against Millwall was disappointing, Ajayi’s return could still be a significant positive for Hull City as the season enters its decisive stage.

The Nigerian defender brings experience, leadership, and defensive stability, qualities that become increasingly important during the pressure-filled final stretch of the Championship campaign.

For Hull, the focus now will be on quickly bouncing back from the defeat. With promotion battles often decided by fine margins, having key players like Ajayi back available could prove crucial.

If he can stay fit and regain full match sharpness in the coming weeks, Ajayi might yet play a major role in Hull City’s push for a playoff spot—and possibly a return to the Premier League. ⚽
