NPFL Slams Rangers with ₦4m Fine, Stadium Ban Over Security Breaches

NPFL Slams Rangers with ₦4m Fine, Stadium Ban Over Security Breaches

The Nigeria Premier Football League has handed Rangers International a ₦4 million fine following multiple breaches of league rules during their clash against Barau FC.

According to the league body, Rangers failed to provide adequate security, which led to unauthorized individuals gaining access to restricted areas of the stadium. The situation reportedly escalated, with match officials being harassed — an incident the NPFL described as damaging to the image of the game.

The breakdown of the sanctions includes:

  • ₦1 million for failure to provide proper security

  • ₦1 million for encroachment onto the field of play

  • ₦1 million for unsporting conduct by club officials

  • ₦1 million for failing to control supporters’ behavior

In addition to the financial penalties, Rangers have been ordered to play their next two home matches behind closed doors — a decision that could significantly impact both team morale and revenue.

The Enugu-based club has been given 48 hours to appeal the sanctions.

🧠 Opinion: Discipline Is Non-Negotiable for League Growth

This decision by the NPFL sends a strong and necessary message — football cannot thrive without order and accountability.

For too long, issues like poor security, fan misconduct, and interference with match officials have held back the growth of the Nigerian league. Incidents like this don’t just affect one club; they damage the credibility of the entire competition.

The fine may seem heavy, but the real punishment is the closed-door matches. Football without fans loses its energy, and clubs also suffer financially. That alone should push teams to take crowd control and security more seriously.

At the same time, this is a test of the NPFL’s consistency. Enforcement must be fair and uniform across all clubs, not selective. If the league maintains this level of discipline across the board, it could mark a turning point in improving professionalism.

For Rangers, the focus now should be on learning from this setback. With their history and stature in Nigerian football, they are expected to lead by example — not fall short of basic standards.

In the end, if the NPFL truly wants to compete globally in terms of quality and reputation, decisions like this are not just important — they are necessary.
