Ibadan United Forfeit NLO Match, Fined ₦500,000 Over Assault on Match Officials
Ibadan United have been sanctioned by the Nationwide League One after forfeiting their 2026 league match against Ilaji FC following a disturbing incident involving players and match officials.
In a statement released on Monday, the NLO confirmed that Ibadan United were fined ₦500,000 after some of their players invaded the pitch and assaulted match officials during the live-streamed fixture at Durbar Stadium.
The league body described the incident as a serious case of misconduct and unsportsmanlike behavior, stating that the actions disrupted the match and violated league regulations.
In addition to the team’s punishment, three players — Ojedokun Basit, Lawal Hassan, and Aderibigbe Hammed — have been suspended indefinitely from all football-related activities pending further action.
Ibadan United are required to settle the fine before their next league match and are yet to officially accept or challenge the sanctions imposed.
Opinion
This incident is another reminder of the discipline challenges that continue to affect grassroots football in Nigeria. While emotions can run high in competitive matches, assaulting match officials crosses a line that undermines the integrity of the sport.
The NLO’s swift action sends an important message that violence and intimidation will not be tolerated. For lower-division football to grow professionally, there must be accountability not only for clubs but also for players who bring the game into disrepute.
More broadly, incidents like this damage the image of local football at a time when Nigerian leagues are trying to attract more fans, sponsors, and media attention. Respect for officials and fair play remain essential if the sport is to develop sustainably.
