Ebuka Obi-Uchendu Opens Up on Smoking Addiction, Shares Journey to Recovery
Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has revealed details of his past struggle with smoking addiction and how he was eventually able to overcome it.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast alongside singer Banky W and social media doctor Aproko Doctor, Ebuka shared that he started smoking as early as Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) and continued for about 13 years.
He disclosed that by the time he got to university, his habit had escalated significantly.
“I started smoking in JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I entered university, I was smoking two packs a day,” he said.
Ebuka explained that he was eventually able to quit through deliberate effort and personal discipline.
Banky W also shared his own experience, speaking about struggling with pornography addiction as part of his attempt to overcome earlier behavioral patterns. He noted that replacing one addiction with another is a common mistake people make in recovery.
Aproko Doctor added that many addictive behaviours stem from attempts to escape emotional pain, stressing the importance of self-awareness and healthy coping mechanisms.
Opinion
Ebuka’s openness helps normalize conversations around addiction, especially in environments where such topics are often stigmatized. Public figures sharing personal struggles can make it easier for others to acknowledge and confront their own challenges.
What stands out from the discussion is the shared emphasis on self-awareness. Whether it is smoking, pornography, or other habits, the underlying issue often goes beyond the behaviour itself and is tied to emotional coping.
The conversation reinforces the idea that recovery is not just about stopping a habit, but also understanding the reasons behind it and building healthier ways to deal with stress and pressure.
