Sheggz Says It Ended In January, And That He Had Bought A Ring
Lagos · Friday 21 August 2026
Segun Daniel Olusemo, known to several million Nigerians as Sheggz, has confirmed that his relationship with Bella Okagbue ended and that he has been single since January 2026. He denies cheating. He denies abuse. He says he had bought a ring. Bella has responded publicly by calling him a liar.
The relationship began on national television in the Big Brother Naija house in 2022 and has been discussed in public more or less continuously since. What ended privately in January is being litigated in August, and the reason for the gap is the most interesting thing about it.
The account he has given
Sheggz says he did not cheat and has been single since January. He says attempts at reconciliation were made afterwards, and that he concluded there were issues of trust and respect he could not overlook when he thought about marriage. He says he genuinely wanted it to work, and that he had gone as far as buying a ring.
He has also said that much of 2025 was difficult for him because of health problems that put him in and out of hospital for an extended period, and he has clarified that it was never his intention to portray Bella as unfaithful.
That last clarification is the tell. It is what somebody says when they have realised that a denial of cheating, delivered publicly, reads to an audience as an accusation pointed the other way. He may not have intended it. It landed that way regardless, which is what the follow-up statement was for.
Why speak at all
The obvious question is why either of them said anything seven months later, and the answer is that the silence had become its own story.
Reality television creates a specific and unusual obligation. A couple who met on a broadcast that a nation watched are treated by that nation as partly public property. When they stop appearing together, the audience does not conclude that a private relationship ended privately. It fills the gap, and what it fills it with is always worse than the truth.
The choice was never between speaking and privacy. It was between his account and everyone else's, and everyone else had a seven month head start.
By the time he spoke, a version had already settled: that there had been infidelity, and in some tellings that there had been abuse. Both are serious. The second is career-ending in a way the first is not. Denying them is not vanity, it is the only remaining move.
And then she called him a liar
Bella's response was direct and public. That is her right, and it is worth stating clearly that a woman who has spent years watching a relationship discussed by strangers has no obligation to accept a former partner's version of it because he published his first.
What follows now is entirely predictable and entirely joyless. Two accounts, no way to resolve them, and an audience of several million that will pick a side on the basis of which of the two they already liked. Nobody outside the relationship knows what happened inside it, and the confident opinions being posted this week are all being formed on identical information, which is to say none.
The part about 2025
The detail most likely to be skipped past is the one about his health. He has described a year spent in and out of hospital, and it is being read mainly as context for the breakup rather than as a thing that happened to a person.
Nigerian celebrity coverage handles illness poorly. It appears as backstory, introduced to explain a career gap or a relationship failure, and then disappears. A year of hospital admissions in your twenties is a significant event on its own terms, and the fact that it is surfacing now only because it is useful to a breakup narrative says something uncomfortable about how these stories get told.
Where it goes
Almost certainly nowhere good. The pattern for these disputes is well established: several days of escalating statements, a period of silence, and then a slow fade as the audience moves to the next thing. Occasionally somebody says something actionable and the lawyers arrive, which is a live risk when abuse allegations are being denied in public.
The one useful thing that could come out of it would be a general recognition that a couple who met on a television show do not owe the country a running commentary on the rest of their lives. That will not happen. It has never happened once in the history of the format, in any country, and Nigeria's audience is more invested than most.
What is reasonable is a smaller thing. Two people who were together for several years have separated and disagree about why. That is an ordinary human event, it happens constantly, and the only unusual feature here is the number of strangers with an opinion about it.
