Phyna Has Put A Number On The Sheggz And Bella Argument

Entertainment

Phyna has entered the Sheggz and Bella argument with an allegation that is different in kind from everything said so far: that Sheggz has no house, and that he owes Bella Okagbue more than N30 million.

Up to this point the dispute had been about character. He said he had not cheated and had been single since January, and that he had bought a ring. She called him a liar. Neither claim can be checked by anybody outside the relationship.

Why a number changes the argument

A debt is a fact about the world. It either exists or it does not, and unlike a question of who was faithful, it leaves a trail: transfers, agreements, messages, sometimes paperwork.

That cuts both ways, and it is worth saying plainly. If the money was lent, there will be evidence of it. If it was not, the person who said it publicly has made a statement about another person's finances that they may be asked to stand behind.

Nigerian celebrity disputes usually stay in the realm of the unfalsifiable. The moment somebody names a figure, they have moved it somewhere else.

The recent precedent everybody just watched

Nine days ago Seyi Vibez posted claims about Hilda Baci. A formal demand letter from Olaniwun Ajayi LP arrived the next day citing defamation and the Cybercrimes Act, and the posts came down within a week.

That is now the reference point for every Nigerian public figure with a lawyer on retainer. It took twenty-four hours and no court case, and it worked.

Where this probably goes

Most likely nowhere formal. Reality television disputes in Nigeria follow a reliable arc: escalating statements for several days, a period of silence, then the audience moves on to the next season, which in this case is already running.

The one thing that would change that is if the N30 million claim is contested by the person it is about. Everything else here is opinion, and opinion is free.
