Kaitano Tembo Targets Winning Start as Zimbabwe Face Nigeria in Unity Cup Semi-Final

Kaitano Tembo has set his sights on victory as his side prepares to face the Nigeria national football team in the Unity Cup semi-final in London.

The Warriors will take on the Super Eagles at The Valley Stadium on Tuesday, May 26, as part of the invitational tournament.

Zimbabwe arrived in Birmingham on Thursday to begin preparations before relocating to London ahead of the fixture, which Tembo says is important for building momentum.

Speaking to the Zimbabwe Football Association, the coach emphasized the importance of starting the competition positively while also assessing his team’s performance.

“I think for us, the most important thing is to see a lot of positives from the team. We want to win because it is important for us to start on a positive note and maintain the result,” he said.

The match is expected to serve as an early test for both sides as they prepare for upcoming competitive international fixtures.

Opinion

This fixture may be labelled a friendly tournament game, but both teams are clearly approaching it with a competitive mindset. For Zimbabwe, a win against a stronger opponent like Nigeria would be a major confidence boost.

Tembo’s emphasis on both performance and result reflects a balanced approach—using the game to build structure while still maintaining a winning mentality.

For Nigeria, matches like this are equally important for testing squad depth and maintaining standards, especially against teams eager to prove themselves on an international stage.
