Pep Guardiola Explains Decision to Leave Manchester City After 10-Year Spell

Pep Guardiola Explains Decision to Leave Manchester City After 10-Year Spell

Pep Guardiola has revealed that his decision to leave Manchester City FC is driven by a feeling of exhaustion, saying he is “running out of energy” after a decade in charge.

The City manager made the comments while speaking to reporters, drawing a comparison with former Liverpool FC boss Jürgen Klopp, who stepped down from his role in 2024.

Guardiola explained that the demands of managing at the highest level—playing every three days, constant pressure to win trophies, and maintaining intensity in training—had taken a toll over the years.

“I share the same feeling as when Jurgen Klopp left. I am running out of energy,” he said.

He added that after ten years at the club, he feels it is the right time for both himself and Manchester City to begin a new chapter.

“It’s been 10 years… I think the club needs a new manager, new energy,” Guardiola said, noting that the squad is strong enough to continue competing at the highest level.

He also reflected on the relentless nature of elite football management, referencing intense fixtures across Europe and the emotional and physical demands of the job.

Opinion

Guardiola’s reflection highlights a reality often overlooked in football: even the most successful managers eventually face burnout. Sustained success at the highest level requires constant emotional intensity, strategic evolution, and near-constant pressure.

His comparison with Klopp is also telling—both managers transformed their respective clubs but chose to step aside before performance declined. That kind of timing is rare in elite sport.

If this truly marks the end of his Manchester City era, it will likely be remembered not just for trophies, but for redefining how modern football is played and managed in the Premier League.
