Pep Guardiola Names Sir Alex Ferguson England’s Greatest-Ever Manager
Pep Guardiola has described former Manchester United FC boss Alex Ferguson as the greatest manager in English football history.
The Manchester City FC manager made the remarks during his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s final Premier League fixture against Aston Villa FC on Sunday.
Guardiola praised Ferguson’s longevity, influence, and achievements during his legendary spell at Manchester United, where he won multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and European trophies.
“He is the greatest in this country,” Guardiola said.
“The tenure, the time, and for many, many reasons…”
The Spaniard also referenced Ferguson’s famous “noisy neighbours” remark previously directed at Manchester City during United’s dominance years, joking that City are now simply “the neighbours.”
Ferguson retired in 2013, three years before Guardiola arrived in England following his successful spell at FC Bayern Munich.
Opinion
Guardiola’s comments carry weight because they come from a manager who has himself redefined success in English football. For one elite coach to publicly acknowledge another in this way reflects deep professional respect.
While football fans often debate who is the greatest manager in Premier League history, Ferguson’s longevity remains one of the strongest arguments in his favor. Sustaining dominance across different generations, squads, and football eras is an achievement few managers have matched.
Guardiola may have transformed English football tactically, but Ferguson’s ability to build lasting success over decades continues to set the benchmark for managerial greatness in England.
