Carragher Identifies Two Key Areas Arsenal Must Strengthen After Champions League Final Defeat

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal must make significant improvements in two attacking positions if they are to turn Champions League heartbreak into European glory next season.

The former England defender made the comments following Arsenal's penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's UEFA Champions League final.

Despite reaching the final and pushing PSG all the way, Carragher insists that Mikel Arteta still needs to strengthen his squad, particularly at centre-forward and left wing.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Carragher suggested Arsenal's pursuit of a new striker should remain a priority and referenced Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres as a player previously linked with the club.

"I think the idea in the summer in terms of bringing Gyokeres in. It hasn't quite worked out for them.

"But I do look at the centre-forward position, and I look at the left wing position, and I think they need big upgrades if they are going to win the Champions League."

Carragher acknowledged that Arsenal came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy but argued that improvements are still necessary if they want to take the final step from contenders to champions.

"Without them, they've come really close, penalties away, but when you look at the run they had to the Champions League final, it was a very favourable run.

"That's definitely where they need to improve in the summer."

Arsenal Face Crucial Transfer Window

After another season of progress under Arteta, Arsenal now face important decisions in the transfer market. While the Gunners have built a strong defensive foundation and boast one of Europe's most effective midfield units, questions remain about their attacking depth and cutting edge.

The centre-forward position has been a recurring topic of discussion, while competition and consistency on the left wing have also been highlighted by pundits throughout the campaign.

Opinion: Carragher May Have a Point, But Arsenal Are Closer Than He Suggests

Carragher's assessment is likely to resonate with many Arsenal supporters. Elite teams often need a ruthless goalscorer capable of deciding tight knockout matches, and adding greater firepower could help Arsenal bridge the gap between competing and winning.

However, describing Arsenal's journey to the final as largely a result of a favourable draw may overlook the progress Arteta's side has made. Reaching a Champions League final requires quality, consistency, and mental resilience regardless of the opponents faced.

The bigger question is whether Arsenal need a complete overhaul or simply targeted upgrades. The evidence suggests the latter. A prolific striker and an elite left-sided attacker could provide the additional edge required in decisive moments.

The painful defeat to PSG exposed the fine margins at the highest level. Arsenal were only a penalty shootout away from European glory. If the club recruits wisely this summer, Carragher's proposed upgrades could be the difference between another near miss and lifting the Champions League trophy next season.
